Brazil suspends Discord livestreaming until safeguards can be demonstrated

Brazil’s data-protection authority ordered Discord on 12 August to suspend its “Go Live” feature until it demonstrates adequate protection for minors. The ANPD gave the company three business days to prove compliance and can impose fines of up to 50 million reais per violation; Discord may appeal. This is more than another request for safer defaults. The regulator identified a technical accountability gap: Discord reportedly cannot inspect livestreams in real time, while its moderation depends on imperfect systems and user reports. A temporary feature-level restriction is promising because it attaches consequences to a design that cannot be supervised as claimed. Yet broad suspension can also remove legitimate community uses, and Discord calls the order premature. For families and server administrators, the practical lesson is not to treat private groups or invitation links as safety controls. Review who may stream, preserve evidence of specific violations, use platform reporting, and—where Brazilian law applies—the ANPD’s dedicated ECA Digital complaint channel. AI weather models help track a typhoon, but intensity remains the hard part

As Typhoon Dolphin approached China, AI forecasting systems including FengWu, Pangu and FuXi ran alongside conventional physics-based models. Reuters reported on 11 August, with an update on 12 August, that FengWu’s operator said its five-day prediction placed landfall within 30 minutes and 30 kilometres. That is a company claim about one storm, not an independent scorecard. Peer-reviewed evaluations nevertheless show real promise: learned models can produce medium-range forecasts far faster and improve some track and large-scale variables. The danger is asymmetric performance. A 2025 operational-trial study found that several AI models underestimated cyclone intensity and sometimes produced large long-range errors. They also depend on observations and initial states supplied by the conventional forecasting machinery they are said to challenge. Individuals should therefore use official warnings and local emergency instructions, not attractive model maps shared online. The actionable question for weather agencies is whether AI adds an independent ensemble member whose uncertainty is disclosed—not whether it wins a single forecast contest. Cyprus documents how quickly a warmer Mediterranean is changing

A 2026 inventory of Cypriot waters recorded 221 confirmed non-indigenous marine species, plus 47 cryptogenic or uncertain cases—more than double the total in the previous 2009 inventory. Reuters on 11 August placed that evidence inside a wider Mediterranean shift driven by warming water, the Suez Canal and shipping. Lionfish, rabbitfish, blue crabs and toxic pufferfish are altering food webs and fisheries; researchers are testing selective traps and, for some safe species, new food markets.
