South Korea’s Seoul High Court upheld an 18-month prison sentence for a former SK Hynix employee who admitted taking classified CMOS image-sensor manufacturing information and disclosing some of it in a résumé submitted to a Chinese company. Reuters reported the appeal judgment on 9 August, citing Yonhap; the court did not immediately respond to Reuters. Image sensors sit inside ordinary phones and laptops, so the case concerns the manufacturing knowledge behind everyday devices, not an abstract geopolitical trophy. Enforcing trade-secret rules can protect costly engineering work and confidence between employers and specialists. The danger is that broad secrecy claims can also chill legitimate mobility and the transfer of general expertise. Taiwan tests what daily life looks like when mobile data becomes scarce

The promising idea is practical resilience: discovering dependencies in a controlled window rather than during a disaster or attack. The limitation is equally important: a rehearsed, announced slowdown cannot reproduce the confusion, equipment damage or misinformation of a real outage. It may also normalise network intervention unless its scope and results are transparent. Anyone can borrow the exercise without borrowing its military context: agree on a family meeting point, save essential numbers offline and know which services still work without mobile data. AI enters a hacking workflow—but the evidence shows preparation, not autonomy

South Korean security company Genians reported on 10 August that infrastructure associated with the North Korea-linked Kimsuky group contained installed local-model tools including Ollama, GPT4All and Msty, alongside document search, agent-development and speech-processing material. Its logs also documented Git-based command-and-control activity and disguised AsyncRAT payloads. This is useful because it replaces vague claims about “AI-powered hackers” with observable components defenders can hunt for. Local models can analyse stolen material without sending it to an outside service, and polished decoy documents may make phishing harder to spot. Yet Genians assesses that the group is accumulating capabilities; the evidence does not demonstrate a fully autonomous attack system, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the findings. For individuals, presentation quality is no longer a trust signal. Verify unexpected invitations, payment documents and research files through a separate channel; organisations should look for the reported PowerShell, LNK and Git-repository behaviours rather than relying on AI labels alone.
