Congo’s Ebola outbreak becomes the country’s deadliest
The material development since our earlier coverage is the death toll. Data released by the Democratic Republic of Congo’s government on Sunday, 16 August, recorded 2,325 deaths and 4,945 confirmed cases, making this the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history; 101 cases were added in the preceding 24 hours. The milestone is not promising in itself. Its value is that it removes any remaining ambiguity about the scale and speed of the emergency, which can sharpen surveillance, funding and community response. The danger is that confirmed counts may still lag infections, while fear, disrupted care and mistrust can make containment harder. For most readers outside affected areas, the immediate personal risk is low, but the consequences are not abstract for families, health workers and already strained public services. A realistic action is to follow DRC and WHO guidance rather than viral claims, and, if giving, support organisations with a verified field presence and transparent outbreak reporting. A hardware wallet protected the keys, but not the owner’s address
SafePal disclosed on 16 August that an authorisation flaw in an order-tracking plug-in exposed the order records of about 39,798 customers who bought products between 2 March 2025 and 11 April 2026. Names, email and physical addresses, phone numbers and purchase details were accessed. The company says seed phrases, private keys and wallet credentials were not involved, and that it has fixed the flaw, engaged an outside security firm and cut relevant data retention to 90 days. Those are constructive responses, but they do not erase the asymmetry: knowing who bought a hardware wallet, and where it was delivered, can enable unusually convincing phishing, impersonation or even physical targeting. Individuals should treat every unexpected refund, firmware-update, support or delivery message that mentions the purchase as hostile. Go to the official site or app independently—never through the message—and never reveal a seed phrase. A heart “digital twin” becomes more useful by admitting uncertainty
A study published in Nature Cardiovascular Research on 14 August tested personalised computer models for planning catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia, a dangerous rhythm often sustained by electrical circuits around scarred heart tissue. Instead of building one supposedly definitive virtual heart from a scan, the framework varied plausible definitions of scar, simulated the resulting circuits and combined the best matches into a heat map of potential treatment targets. In 11 patients with inducible ischaemic ventricular tachycardia, simulated and recorded ECG patterns agreed closely on average. The promising idea is methodological: uncertainty in an image is carried into the recommendation rather than hidden. The limitation is decisive, however. The study included only 14 patients, performance was weaker in several cases, and the model did not guide treatment prospectively; the authors say a larger prospective trial is still required. PJM proposes that large new loads yield before households
On 13 August, PJM Interconnection filed a proposal with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for managing data centres and other new facilities with peak demand of at least 50 megawatts. The plan would create a large-load registry and, when reserves tighten, curtail qualifying new loads before traditional consumers; sites with backup generation could switch to it. This is a proposal, not an operating rule. Its promise is legibility and priority: grid operators would know where major demand sits, while households would be less likely to bear the first outage risk or all the cost of serving rapid growth. The danger is displacement. Backup generators are often fossil-fuelled, so reliability at regional scale can mean noise and pollution for nearby communities; confidentiality rules may also limit what the public sees.
