China closes loopholes in carmakers’ 60-day payment promise

Chinese regulators introduced stricter supplier-payment rules on 7 September after major automakers’ voluntary promise to pay within 60 days failed to end lengthy delays. The machinery matters: payment time must now start from a clearer point, acceptance procedures receive deadlines, engineering and service providers are included, and carmakers are discouraged from forcing suppliers to accept commercial bills or supply-chain notes instead of cash. Companies with large unpaid balances, deliberate delays or repeated complaints can face joint regulatory interviews, required correction and legal penalties. AI turns Fermat’s Last Theorem into checkable code

Anthropic reported on 4 September that a Claude-based agent system produced an end-to-end formalisation of Fermat’s Last Theorem in Lean, and Nature independently highlighted the result on 7 September. The achievement is verification, not a new mathematical proof: Andrew Wiles proved the theorem in 1995, while the new work translates a proof path into code whose logical steps a small trusted kernel can check. Anthropic says dozens of agents worked largely autonomously for 11 days, generating 13 million lines and 29,500 intermediate theorems used in the final argument. The public artifact and a review by mathematician Kevin Buzzard make the claim unusually inspectable. Yet size is also the limitation. The code is far longer than a human exposition, depends on existing community libraries and still deserves reproducibility and security scrutiny; a green check does not explain why the mathematics is insightful. Jakarta’s airports reopen, but Anak Krakatau remains active

What is materially new: after the eruption and closures covered in the 6 September review, Jakarta’s two main airports and three regional airports reopened just after midnight on 8 September. Authorities allowed operations to resume only after judging conditions safe and requiring aircraft inspections. The two-day interruption affected 2,961 flights, including 622 international services, and about 341,000 passengers—showing how rapidly a geological hazard can become a network-wide transport problem. Reopening is promising because it reflects observation-led operational decisions rather than a fixed timetable. It does not mean the hazard has ended. Anak Krakatau produced further eruptions on Tuesday morning, remained at Indonesia’s second-highest alert level, and retained a three-kilometre exclusion zone; volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines even when it is difficult to see from the ground.
