A court blocks the Pentagon from treating AI guardrails as sabotage

A US grid order expands equipment security into the whole service chain
What is materially new: the foreign-equipment restrictions covered in the 30 July review have broadened into a binding executive order for the US bulk-power system. Signed on 26 August, it declares a national emergency and authorizes prohibitions on transactions involving equipment linked to covered foreign entities—including critical components, software, firmware, digital and maintenance services, and remote-access capabilities—when officials determine that they create cybersecurity or operational risk. This is promising because hidden maintenance channels and software control can matter as much as the transformer or inverter bearing the label. The uncertainty lies in implementation: the Energy Department must still identify covered equipment and conditions, while the order’s broad language could raise costs, disrupt replacement supply or become a geopolitical label without transparent technical evidence. Grid operators and public utility commissions should publish asset inventories, remote-access dependencies and the criteria used for replacement. Updated COVID vaccines target XFG, with an important evidence gap
The US Food and Drug Administration approved updated Moderna, Pfizer–BioNTech and Novavax–Sanofi COVID vaccines on 27 August for the 2026–27 season. The products target XFG, a descendant of the JN.1 lineage selected by an advisory panel in May; the previous US formula targeted LP.8.1. Matching the vaccine more closely to circulating virus is promising, and the continued availability of both mRNA and protein-based products gives patients and clinicians options. A lettuce outbreak grows after the recalled food has gone
US authorities updated their investigation on 27 August after linking 11,458 cyclosporiasis illnesses across 20 states to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico; at least 495 people were hospitalized. Georgia, Tennessee and Texas were newly added. The lettuce, processed by Taylor Farms de Mexico and served or sold through several channels including Taco Bell, was recalled on 17 July, and the FDA says it is confident the affected product is no longer on the market. After Nepal’s glacier collapse, engineers confront the next flood
A catastrophic flood struck the Nepal–Tibet border on 26 August after a glacier collapse triggered landslides and a surge of water and debris. By early 28 August, Nepal police reported 469 deaths, while nearly 1,000 people remained missing across the border region. The danger is continuing: debris has formed barrier lakes that can fail suddenly, and further rain is destabilizing slopes. Chinese teams are using aerial surveys and three-dimensional modelling to measure one lake and design a drainage channel; preliminary estimates put it at roughly 150 metres long, 40–50 metres deep and holding up to two million cubic metres of water. That rapid measurement is promising, but modelling cannot make steep, inaccessible terrain predictable, and emergency engineering can itself disturb an unstable dam.
