Zagreb’s robotaxis enter everyday service—with a human still aboard
Uber, Croatian operator Verne and China’s Pony.ai launched autonomous rides in Zagreb on 19 August, Uber’s first such service in Europe. Users requesting an UberX or Comfort trip can be matched with a self-driving vehicle in selected areas, including the city centre. A licensed operator will initially remain on board. That makes this a real, bounded deployment rather than a demonstration, and the supervised phase may reveal how the technology handles European streets and ordinary passengers. It also makes the word “autonomous” easy to overread: public evidence on incidents, interventions and the threshold for removing the operator remains limited. Responsibility is divided among the software provider, fleet operator and booking platform. Riders can opt out if the arrangement is unclear; those who participate should note who operates the vehicle and read the safety instructions. Zagreb’s authorities should publish comparable intervention, collision and accessibility data before approving wider coverage or driverless operation.
A specific industrial controller is now under active cyber warning
This is a material follow-up to the water-system attacks covered in July: on 19 August, CISA, the NSA, FBI and partner agencies issued an active-threat advisory covering Siemens S7-series programmable logic controllers used in water, energy, manufacturing, chemicals and food production. Reuters reported the warning the same day. Naming the affected equipment gives operators something concrete to inventory and protect; that is more useful than a general warning about “critical infrastructure.” The danger is that industrial systems are often old, poorly catalogued and difficult to patch without interrupting safe operations. Officials have not formally attributed the recent water attacks, and their observation that attackers use AI to reduce time and expertise does not demonstrate autonomous hacking. For individuals, the concern is continuity of water, power and food systems. Follow your utility’s official alerts and keep a modest emergency water supply; operators should apply the advisory through controlled maintenance, not improvised live-system changes.
Brain organoids keep a human-like developmental clock for years
Researchers have sustained laboratory-grown brain organoids for nearly six years and found that their cells passed through later developmental stages on a timetable resembling human brain development. The peer-reviewed study in Nature, highlighted by the US National Institutes of Health on 19 August, followed gene activity, epigenetic age and cell structure at single-cell resolution. Older neurons transplanted into younger organoids continued along their older trajectory, supporting the idea of a cell-intrinsic developmental clock. This creates a longer window for studying autism and other conditions that short-lived models miss. But organoids are simplified tissues, without a body’s circulation, senses or full anatomy; they are not miniature people, and the result is not a therapy. Individuals may ultimately benefit through better disease models, but clinical claims remain distant. When encountering organoid headlines, ask which cell types and functions were validated—and whether donor consent, ethics oversight and independent replication are clearly documented.
Choosing urban trees can reduce ozone chemistry without sacrificing shade
A study published in Science Advances used high-frequency measurements above Beijing to show that plant-emitted compounds were only about a tenth of measured volatile organic compounds but accounted for nearly half their chemical reactivity. As temperatures rose from 20°C to 35°C, tree emissions became much more reactive; isoprene dominated. The researchers’ cross-city comparison suggests species mix strongly affects the result, and their model estimates that replacing the highest-emitting 10% of trees during normal renewal could reduce isoprene by at least 29%. The University of Innsbruck described the findings on 20 August. The practical promise is better planting, not fewer trees. Beijing measurements and modelling will not transfer unchanged to every climate, and ozone chemistry also depends on nitrogen oxides from traffic and industry. Residents can support diverse, climate-suitable, low-emitting species in new planting and replacement plans—while resisting simplistic calls to remove mature trees or relax pollution controls.
