TikTok settles a US children’s-privacy case for $400 million
On 21 August, TikTok, ByteDance and affiliated entities agreed to pay $400 million to resolve the US government’s 2024 case alleging violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The settlement is one of the largest recoveries in a COPPA case: $300 million is due immediately and $100 million if an earlier order against TikTok’s predecessor is vacated. It is encouraging that rules requiring parental consent before collecting data from under-13s can carry a material cost. But a payment is not proof that age checks work: the Justice Department says TikTok has strengthened controls, while the agreement makes no determination of liability. Families remain dependent on systems that must infer whether a child entered a false birth date. A useful action is to review a child’s account together—birth date, visibility, messages, downloads and deletion options—and submit a written deletion request for an underage account rather than relying only on an in-app toggle. Moon-bound microbes may persist long enough to confuse the science
A NASA-led study published in Science Advances on 19 August modelled five common fungi and bacteria under conditions near the lunar South Pole. It found potential niches where some could remain viable for weeks or months, with Aspergillus niger the most resilient. This is useful because it turns planetary protection from a general aspiration into maps that mission planners can use around landing sites, tools and ice deposits. The important limitation is that no organism was placed on the Moon: the work simulated survival, not growth or reproduction, and it found no evidence of a lunar ecosystem. The human concern is scientific provenance. Microbes carried on suits or machinery could complicate later analysis of organic molecules or resources, making it harder to distinguish lunar chemistry from terrestrial contamination. China recalls 4.3 million cars over emergency door access
Tesla and eight other automakers announced recalls on 21 August covering about 4.3 million vehicles in China, the country’s largest automotive recall. Regulators say emergency mechanical releases may be hard to find or operate after a crash and electrical failure. Tesla’s share—about 2.98 million Model 3, Y, S and X vehicles—will enter recall from 25 September; remedies include clearer labels and software that lowers windows after a collision. The recall is promising because it reasserts a simple engineering principle: a safety-critical function needs an understandable fallback when power or software fails. The danger is that labels and remote updates may not solve every physical-access problem, and no matching US recall had been announced by 21 August. Owners elsewhere should therefore not assume geography equals safety. Check the vehicle identification number against the relevant regulator or manufacturer recall database, then practise locating the manual release before an emergency—and show regular passengers where it is.
